“Mocking Manakin!”: NAOC Bird Call virtual Contest

In this virtual event, we invite students and professionals attending the NAOC to take part in a competition imitating vocalizations and behaviors of different birds. Participants should upload a video to Vimeo with their performance, which will be posted online during the event. Performances can be individual or in groups (you can assemble videos from different participants for group participation).

We will require you to include a link to a video or sound recording of the bird(s) you are imitating in your video performance in order to make it easier for observers to identify the birds, as there will be competitors and participants who may not be familiar with your chosen species. Reference media can be found easily at the Macaulay Library (https://www.macaulaylibrary.org/). For example, here is a video of the Red-capped Manakin (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/201115121), who represents our competition!

Each NAOC attendant will be able to vote online for his/her favorite imitation. The videos with the most votes will be invited to repeat their performances live (online) during the closing ceremony on August 15^th, when the winner will be announced and they will receive special prizes! You can upload your videos until 9^th of August (20:00 hs Eastern Time). The voting will be open from August 10^th (00:00 hs Eastern Time) to 14^th noon (12:00 hs Eastern Time).

All performances are welcome; what matters is having fun, interacting, and celebrating our fascination with birds.

“¡Mocking Manakin!”: Competencia virtual de Imitaciones de Aves

En este evento virtual invitamos a estudiantes y profesionales que asisten de la NAOC a participar de la competencia imitando vocalizaciones y comportamientos de diferentes aves. Los participantes podrán subir los videos con sus imitaciones a Vimeo, los cuales estarán disponibles online durante el congreso. Las presentaciones podrán ser individuales o grupales (se pueden ensamblar videos de distintos participantes para armar una presentación grupal).

Le vamos a solicitar que incluya un video o una grabación de sonido de la/s ave/s que estará imitando en su video, de manera de facilitar la identificación para los observadores, ya que habrá competidores y participantes que pueden no estar familiarizados con las especies que usted eligió imitar. Pueden encontrar fácilmente archivos de referencia en la Biblioteca Macaulay (https://www.macaulaylibrary.org/ ). Cada participante de NAOC va a poder votar online por su imitación favorita. Los videos más votados serán invitados a repetir sus actuaciones en vivo (online) durante la ceremonia de cierre el 15 de Agosto, donde se anunciarán los ganadores que recibirán premios especiales! Podrá enviar sus videos hasta el día 9 de Agosto (20:00 hs EDT). La votación estará abierta desde el 10 de Agosto (00:00 hs EDT) hasta el 14 de Agosto al mediodía (12:00 hs EDT).

Todas las imitaciones son bienvenidas, lo importante será divertirnos, interactuar y celebrar nuestra fascinación por las aves.

We are hosting our seventh North American Ornithological Conference online in its first-ever virtual format during the week of 10-15 August 2020, instead of meeting as planned in Puerto Rico this year. As our modified logo with the clever corvid (crow) proudly pronounces, this will be THE CONFERENCE COVID-19 COULD NOT CANCEL! We already have more than 1,000 attendees registered for the 6-day conference and have an exciting line-up of plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations, lightning talks, workshops, round-table discussions, and fun events. Anyone interested in birds is welcome to join us!

We are raising funds to provide free or highly reduced registration rates for students from all over the world, early professional ornithologists, and professional colleagues from the Caribbean, Latin America, and other special countries. Some of the proceeds will also be donated to the Puerto Rico Ornithological Society (Sociedad Ornitólogica Puertorriqueña), a non-profit organization focused on increasing the awareness of Puerto Rico’s bird life and the conservation and sustainable management of their habitats. We support their efforts even if we cannot be there in person this year!

Please choose something fun—an avant-garde face mask, a practical, commemorative mug, or some snappy apparel to wear—and while you are at it, consider an extra donation to support the study and conservation of birds in the face of COVID-19!
