Call for Abstracts

We invite you to submit an abstract for consideration as an oral presentation or poster in the general sessions. You do not need to register for the annual meeting before submitting an abstract; however, you are required to register within 30 days of receiving notification of abstract acceptance to ensure your place in the scientific program.

We have a limited number of slots in the scientific program and we want to ensure that we can offer a talk to as many authors as possible (for those whose first choice is a talk). Therefore, we will have some limits on authors who want to give more than one talk: A person can present two symposium talks and zero general session talks, or one symposium talk and one general session talk. Three talks by the same author will not be allowed (unless space allows all other requests to be met). Posters are not restricted (e.g., an author giving 1-2 talks can also give one or more posters). If you already have have a Member Portal username and password (e.g., you are a current or previous member of AOS or one of the other OSNA societies), you can navigate directly to the abstract submission form: Submit Your Abstract Here.

Don’t have a Member Portal account or you are not sure?

If you do not already have a username and password, you will first need to set up your free account from the Member Portal login page. Click the “Create a User Account” on the left side of the login page.

If you are not sure if you have an existing account, click the “Forgot your password? Click here” link on the left side of the page and then enter your email address on the following page. If you have an existing account with that email address, the system will send you a link to reset your password.

Once you have your account established, you can navigate to the submission form by selecting “View Open Competitions” in the Awards, Competitions, & Submissions section in the lower right of the screen. On the resulting page, find the AOS 2019 Abstracts for Oral Presentations and Posters and click “View”.

Prepare your abstract prior to logging onto the online submission form. Simply cut and paste it from your separate editable document into the text window on the abstract submission system. This way you retain your own copy in case there is an internet or other interruption during the submission process.

If you are not experienced with writing scientific abstracts, consider reading one of the many online writing guides (e.g. “How to write a good abstract…”). In general, include 1-2 sentences of background information, 1-2 sentences for each: stating the question or hypothesis to be addressed; a brief summary of the methodology used; and the results and interpretation. Be brief and as precise as possible, use first person, and avoid statements that don’t convey information (e.g. “results of our analyses will be discussed”). Abstracts are limited to 250 words, and titles are limited to 125 characters.

The following information is required in the online submission process.

  1. Presenting author’s name
  2. Presenting author’s affiliation/organization
  3. Presenting author’s phone and email
  4. Student status of the presenting author
  5. If the presenter is an undergraduate student and the abstract is accepted, would the student like the talk to be included in the AOS Undergraduate Symposium?
  6. If the presenter is a student and the abstract is accepted, would the student like to be considered for a Student Presentation Award?
  7. Would the presenter like to be considered for a student or post-doc travel award?
  8. Would the presenter like to be considered for a Diversity & Inclusion Student travel award?
  9. If eligible for a student Diversity & Inclusion travel award, please describe how the attendance at the AOS meeting or your research contributes to fostering diversity and inclusion at the AOS meeting or ornithology in general.
  10. Names and contact info of the co-authors of the presentation
  11. Title of presentation (125-character limit)
  12. Abstract (250-word limit)
  13. Rank your preference for the type of presentation: 15-min talk, 5-min lightning talk, or Poster. You can also indicate if you do not want a particular format, as well as if you have no preference for format.
  14. Select up to 4 topical areas in which your presentation best fits (from a drop down menu).
  15. Special needs for your presentation (e.g., I will require wheelchair assistance). This block can be left blank.
  16. Were you invited to give this talk in a special symposium (Yes/No)?
  17. If you answered yes to the question above, please indicate in which of the following accepted symposia your presentation belongs.
  18. Notes to Scientific Program Committee. This block can be left blank.
  19. Are you willing to chair your session or a different session (Yes/No)?

When finished, you may click the “Submit” button or save the submission as a draft and come back to edit it later. If you save your submission as a draft, you can change and edit your abstract by logging in to the OSNA Member Portal homepage and selecting “View My Competition Entries” in the Awards, Competitions & Submissions section in the lower right of the screen. You can continue to make changes until you click “Submit” or until the abstract submission deadline (15 February 2019).
